Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

André Kostolany, 1906 in Ungarn geboren, war der unbestrittene Meister der Börsenspekulation. Er studierte Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte und wäre eigentlich lieber Pianist geworden. Ende der 1920er machte er seinen ersten Börsendeal, und die Welt der Finanzen ließ ihn nie wieder los. Der »geistreiche Buchautor, humorvolle Kolumnist und amüsante Plauderer« (DER SPIEGEL) hatte weltweit ein Millionenpublikum, seine Bücher wurden in viele Sprachen übersetzt. Bis kurz vor seinem Tod nahm er regen Anteil am Welt- und Börsengeschehen. Am 14. September 1999 ist André Kostolany 93-jährig in Paris gestorben.

Eine Sammlung aus Anekdoten und Aphorismen über die Börse und das Leben; leicht zu lesen, ideal z.B. als Reiselektüre oder für Wartezimmer, weil man jederzeit unterbrechen kann.

Ein Buch dass in das Regal eines jeden Aktionärs gehört. Kostolany ist zeitlos und wird wie Graham immer einen Platz in den Aktienbesitzerbibliotheken finden.

Wenige zusammenhängende Erzählungen. Es handelt sich um eine literarische Resteverwertung. Die Geschichten sind schlecht gealtert man merkt dem Buch die Zeit an. Ein paar interessante Einblicke aber aus meiner Sicht nur für echte Kosto Fans zu empfehlen.

Viele spannende und zugleich lustige Anekdoten aus André Kostolanys Leben, aus welchen man auch viel über die Börse lernen kann.

Zugegeben; fast Siebzehn Euro für 171 Seiten sind etwas happig...für mich ist jedoch jedes Buch vom Börsenaltmeister sein Geld wert. Qualität hat eben seinen Preis!Die Einsichten, die man durch das Lesen seiner Bücher bekommt, dienen wohl nicht nur dem Erfolg an der Börse, ebenso sind sie der eigenen, persönlichen Reifung sehr zuträglich.Auf den Seiten dieses Buches findet man viele Anekdoten, Erlebnisse und persönliche Gedanken dieses sympatischen Spekulanten, die Lust auf das glatte aber interessante Börsenparkett machen. Jedoch nicht in der allgegenwärtigen Zockermanier, sondern immer schön mit der erhabenen Gelassenheit, die "Kosti" stehts auszeichnete.Ein weiteres Buch Kostolanys, welches ich Aktieninteressierten empfehlen kann, ist "Die Kunst über Geld nachzudenken" und absolut unumgänglich das folgende Buch "die Kreatur von Jekyll Island" von G. E. Griffin!

Andre Kostolony ist ohne Zweifel einer der grössten Börsenkenner des letzten Jahrhundert gewesen. Seine kurzen, teilweise sehr amüsanten Anekdoten, gehen bis in die 30 ger Jahre zurück und es wird deutlich, wie hilfreich es ist, die vergangenen Geschehnisse verstehen und analysieren zu können.Obwohl das Buch einfach geschrieben ist, setzt es ein umfangreiches Wissen über die Märkte voraus. Ich hätte mir gewünscht das Andre Kostolany mehr darauf eingeht, was die grundlegenden Ursachen und Treiber einer Marktentwicklung sind, wie man diese erkennt und analysieren kann. Was würde Kostolany zur aktuellen Situation sagen? Gibt es eine Inflation oder eine Deflation oder gar nichts von beidem?Doch wie er in seinem Buch schon angedeutet hat, die wahren Analysten und Profis geben ihr Wissen nicht so einfach Preis. In diese Kategorie fällt auch Andre Kostolany.

Superb in all aspects and a pleasure to read. Very recommended and worth the money. Note that the book does not contain images.

Perhaps everyone who has ever looked at Dianne Arbus's photos has wondered how she feels about her subjects; does she empathize with them or is she exploiting them? The woman who took the pictures is no less confounding, fascinating, and deeply touching.Lubow's extensive research and in-depth interviews with many people in Arbus's life, his insightful analysis of her work, his evenhanded history of her life, including its many contradictions, and his sensitive attempt to bring her into as coherent a whole as any complex human being can be made into, make this not just a masterful biography of Arbus but a notable exemplar of the biographical art itself.The biography tells us, of course, not just of one life, but many, including Dianne's husband, the photographer and actor, Allan Arbus. And it's an exploration of the time when photography grew beyond Steichen's galleries into a major force in the New York art world. It gives insight into a critical era in fashion photography and the influence of Arbus's good friend Richard Avedon. And it deals sensitively with her suicide, the heartbreaking finale to her life but not to her fame and influence.It helps too that Lubow is a gifted, lucid writer who manages to work so much of his extensive research into the book without ever wearying the reader.Another reviewer here laments that Lubow didn't obtain rights to Arbus's pictures, which we would of course all like to have in our hands as we read the book, but the rights are impossible to obtain. Recommend a great biography and I’ll read it. After checking out various reviews of Arthur Lubow’s Diane Arbus bio I ordered it and sat down to feast upon the photographer’s fascinating life and unique photographs. This book has it all: it’s insightful about her art, it’s beautifully written, and it's replete with the kind of detail that comes only when an author has fully grasped the complexities of his/her subject. Lubow’s descriptions of Arbus’s photographs are so good that I didn’t miss the inclusion of photographs. (Goggle them if you must.) This book is a page-turner.

Non judgmental and clearly written. I learned a great deal about her professional struggles. Although she worked for magazines like Esquire she remained economically marginal her whole life and had to depend on others, including her ex-husband for support. She is maddeningly self-destructive. I think her suicide was part of the trajectory from the beginning and was essential to her later fame.

I came of age with Arbus images shortly after she had committed suicide - owning her monograph was a kind of badge of honor in college. Over the years, I have continued to find her work compelling and relevant. This book puts it all in biographical perspective, covering not just her psychological and personal difficulties, but placing her squarely in the art movements of her time.Diane Arbus grew up in an upper middle class home, with a mother who was far more interested in status and appearance than in loving her children. She formed an extremely close, later incestuous, relationship with her older brother. Both were recognized as brilliant, but Diane stood out as a wholly original intellect. Prone to depression, she seemed to lack normal boundaries, portending a life of mental illness.She chose her husband, Allan, when she was 13, though had to wait until high school graduation to marry him, due to his lower middle class background and the disapproval of her parents. They started a fashion photography business, which Diane grew to hate as she had a subordinate role. Both spouses were unfaithful and bi-sexual. Finally, Diane quit the business and began to study photography, happening upon a great mentor, Lisette Model.Once she honed her style, Arbus began to do strikingly original work, a kind of extension of the intimate portrait "types" of August Sander. In her photos, she cultivated a deep rapport with her subjects, coaxing them to drop their guard, sometimes over hours of conversation and pursuit. She combined empathy and an acute awareness of the social situation of her subjects, often seeking out marginal groups such as sideshow freaks, addicts, and LGBTQ, whom she portrayed as individuals as well as Sander's general types. The result was a new kind of photography that helped to raise journalism to a higher art form with the presence of the photographer included, i.e. not just her perception, but how her personality meshed with the subjects. Lubow argues that it fits with modernism and, contrary to her critics, not exploitive of her subjects.What is so remarkable about the book is that Lubow, through the copious documentation available (and unknown to me), describes the genesis of many of Arbus' most iconic images. His approach - descriptive more than interpretive or judgmental - adds to the perception of her art rather than subtracting from it. I will have to look through all of her work again, with fresh eyes and Lubow's insights in mind, which is the best one would hope a critic can accomplish.Lubow also covers her psychological struggles in a cautious way, never falling into jargon but leaving interpretation to the reader. In my view, it was just the right balance. In desperate need of human contact, Arbus was extraordinarily promiscuous, attending orgies and seducing many of her subjects. Stressed financially and overwhelmed by the deterioration of her partnership with Allan, it is a story of long descent into suicidal depression. While recognizing it is reflected in her work, Lubow never romanticizes her mental illness or confused sexuality - it was just part of her.This is a phenomenal read. Perhaps one needs to be very familiar with her work and already appreciative of it, but I never tired of the way Lubow uncovered its layers. Of course, if you don't like her work, you'd probably find this too detailed. Recommended with the greatest enthusiasm.

Although this biography is ultimately heartbreaking, as a freelancer myself in the middle of the wild highs and lows of this life, I intimately found it comforting to read how Arbus was constantly torn between her art and the need to make money. None of us can escape that dichotomy or the tension between the feelings of nurturing our own creations and surviving. What a wild and fantastic woman constantly pushing the limits but also m paying the price for her daring at a time when men were allowed so much more freedom from judgment. Arbus was a writer in every sense of the word and this biography captures her poetic eye.
